March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day!

This year, World Down Syndrome Day falls on a Sunday, but it’s always on March 21. This date was picked for its significance, as Down Syndrome happens when the 21st chromosome is triplicated – as in 3/21.

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) was originally launched in 2006 and was hosted by the Down Syndrome Associate Singapore from 2006 to 2010. In 2012, the United Nations officially recognized WDSD and now, WDSD is celebrated in more than 60 countries around the globe. The organizations and communities in these countries promote WDSD to raise awareness and understanding of Down Syndrome.

Activities and events that take place on March 21 showcase the abilities and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome. These events also focus on encouraging independence, self-advocacy, and freedom of choices for people with Down syndrome.

People wear odd brightly colored socks on WDSD because chromosomes resemble socks. WDSD celebration crafts can include making sock puppets. You can follow these activities by searching #lotsofsocks on social media.

Other events include the National Down Syndrome Society’s Racing for 3.21, an event that allows participants and advocates to run, walk, bike, hike, swim, and/or move for 3.21 miles at any time, any place and at any pace on March 21.

Celebrating what children, teens and adults with Down Syndrome can do, rather than focusing on any limitations, is a mission that Imagine Pediatrics supports wholeheartedly – you might even say we support WDSD times 3!
